Describe the purpose

Start with what the goal would make possible for your household. Avoid choosing a financial product before you understand the purpose.

Write down the time frame

A goal needed soon may call for different questions from one many years away. Record whether the timing is fixed or flexible.

Identify missing information

List the questions you need answered before making a decision. Costs, uncertainty and access to money may all matter.

Your take-away checklist

  • Name the goal in one sentence.
  • Note its timing and flexibility.
  • Choose a review date.

Print this page or copy the checklist to your own notes; no personal information is required.
